Can you recommend a good book about cat behavior/psychology for non-cat people?
Can you please recommend a good book I can give my friend about cats? He's not a cat person, and seems to think that the cats are small dogs and that their behavior can be changed the way a dog's can. It's not working (of course), but he tends to respect expert opinions so a good book would really help.

Chances are he would not read it.
Dr. Michael Fox has several good cat books out.
Ask your guy if he would consider training a cow like a horse, or a rabbit like a dog. Different species learn different ways. A pack mentality dog takes training that solitary hunters like cats would not even recognize.
This site, Messybeast, has behavior case studies on cats and their learning processes. VERY good stuff over there.
