My cat is eighteen years old, and he refuses to do his business in his litterbox anymore. I understand that this is probably due to his age, but it is really causing a problem and nothing I do seems to help. Does anyone know of anything I can do that might make him start using his box again?

The litterbox is in my roommates closet, and he sneaks in there and comes out with nasty breath. We try to watch him, but we can't do it 24/7. I live in an apartment, so I hate shutting him in my small room. I have a female cat that is 5 years old and recently she poops in my bathroom sink. She is litterbox trained and I have had no previous potty issues with her before. The litterbox is also cleaned quite often. She does share it with a male cat, however; but am not sure if that is the problem or not. Is it common for a cat to look for another place to do their business? Any advice would be super, thanks!
