How can i get my ferret to use her litterbox?

1

Shes a few months old, not sure how many. I recently got her maybe a month ago, and she doesn't want to use her litterbox. I put it in the corner she likes to poop in, but she always moves it out the way or poops in front of the litterbox, or plays and rolls around it in. How can i get her to use it?

OK, she is a baby so she needs some love on this one. Like the post before me, train her to use a box in the cage before she learns how to use the box in the house. And, ferrets are not like cats in that they do not spend a lot of time searching for a box, you must give her multiple boxes. Ferrets like low boxes, they won't make a huge effort to climb in a box so I took the cheap cat litter boxes from Wal Mart and used my dremel to cut part of the front down low and put masking tape on the rough edges, now they can back up and into the toilet without a problem. The litter pans cost about a dollar so it won't break your budget. I also use the same pans but don't cut the sides down lined up in the bottom of their cage. I found that three of them fit just right to line the bottom of their cage so I can clean them easily. They only use the outside boxes now and it is easier to take out a litter box than try to clean the whole bottom of the cage.

Now, after she is using the box in her cage, you can work on her house habits. When she wakes up, make sure you do not take her out until you see you use the box. Then, take her out but supervise her vigilantly. Try to confine her activities to one room for a while. When you see her backing up. put her in the box. I would place a box in every corner and known place of poo poo placement. You don't want to punish her, just quietly pick her up and put her in a box. Mine like the larger boxes and won't even attempt to use the corner boxes or the ferret box made for ferrets. The front is too high for them to back in.

She will get the hang of it if you just be patient. Ferrets are not as steady as a cat in using the box without accidents, but all of mine try to make it every time. After a while, I removed some of the boxes that weren't being used, but I found out that they like to change their habits every now and them so I am always happy to put them back if the kids decide they need a toilet in that particular location.

Again, she is a baby and is very silly right now. Make sure she has a clearly defined toilet area in her cage, usually the bottom layer as well as plenty of hammocks and holes to den in in her house areas. Put some of her poop in the box so she gets a clear idea that the box is not a bed, but a toilet. I have also use the same cheap cat boxes up in the top layer of their cage as a bed. I put holes in the sides to attach it securely to the cage and then I put some lambs wool and blanket in the box. Sometime I get 5 ferrets in one box and that way they can all
comfortably..

OK, good luck and give her time, she will be more than happy to oblige you,
