How can I get my kitten to use his litterbox at night?
I adopted a 7 week old kitten last weekend for my 17 year old sister. He will use his litterbox during the day and we thought he was using at night, but last night he peed in one corner in my sister's room (the room he normally sleeps in) and pooped in another corner. Up until now we've only had one other mishap where he pooped in my little sisters room (where we had his litterbox the first 2 days), but that was during the day and we figured it was because his litterbox was moved. Are kittens afraid of the dark? We left a light on in the hall way (we live in a condo) and one on in the room where his litter box and food are kept. How can we get him to use his litterbox at night when he has to go?

I had a similar problem when I got my kitten this spring, but she was peeing on my sofa and bed. Once the smell gets in there, it is difficult to get it out. You need a good enzymatic cleaner to get the smell out. Also, your kitten is still very young and may not know he has to go pee until he can't really hold it. Since the litter box was in the bedroom at first, that is where he still thinks it should be. Cats don't like their stuff rearranged, especially the litter box. And little kittens need to go to the bathroom often so it's very important to pick a place and stick with it so you don't confuse them. Locking the kitten in the bathroom at night until he gets a little older and his bladder is a little stronger would be a good idea. Make sure you also have a bed or carrier for him, food and water and a couple of quiet toys so you can still sleep. Good luck to all of you.
