How do I get my kitten to bury it's feces in the litterbox?

1

I just got a 12 week old female kitten a week ago and it doesn't bury it's feces when it goes to the litterbox. It knows how to use the litterbox and will scratch around usually to cover it's urine but won't do the same with it's feces. They smell pretty bad and my boyfriend and I have been tipping the box back and forth to cover them when it does go. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas, tips or advice about how I could possibly get her to start covering her feces. Thanks.

Stand nearby the litterbox while she's using it and before she gets out, hold on to her front legs, and "show" her the action of covering it up by using her legs to bury her feces. Maybe after a few times, she'll catch on to the fact that she's supposed to do that and will start doing it on her own. Make sure to reward her everytime (if possible, and even when you're showing her how to bury the feces) by giving her some little treat she likes…that way she will associate burying with getting a treat. After awhile hopefully, she'll do it on her own. Make sure to reward her the first few times she does it on her own and then after that, only do it intermittently to the point where she's not receiving the treat anymore. Hope this helps. If it doesn't work, try calling the vet and asking for suggestions. Good luck.
