Is there anything, other than putting them down, that you can do with an agressive dog?

We love him and don't want to put him down, but he's getting aggressive and mean with strangers.
He's a german shepherd mix and has always been protective of us but now he's starting to attack neighbors. He bit our neighbor yesterday when she entered our yard. He didn't break the skin but it scared us (not to mention her) to death.
I wish we knew someone who wanted/could take him but we don't. We've had him for six years.
He has been castrated.
Is there really a time when you know that they can't be helped? We've tried all the techniques the vet has given us. We've even bought the cesar millan video.

This is a serious situation. I had this problem with my male rottweiler. We took him to the vet to make sure he didn't have any underling issues that would cause aggression. Then the vet suggested that we give him a food with LOW protein. Under 25%. We went to natural choice, the one with oatmeal for sensitive stomachs (our other rottie throws up new foods a lot…so we chose this because the bag said it was easy to digest). A grocery store brand with low protein is Pedigree.

Then the next step was to make sure the dog got a lot of exercise. The vet said he needed to be walked twice a day for at least 30 minutes each time. She said the leading cause of aggression is not enough exercise.

Then after that, we had to make sure that the dog understood that we were the "pack leaders". If he doesn't respect that you are number one…he wont respect any human.

The difference all that made was AMAZING!!! He is like a whole new dog. It took a little work, and commitment…but in the long run it was so worth it.
