Well….I have a 7 yr old Chihuahua (Sprocket) who is very aggressive. He has been neutered, had personal trainers, had shock collars and has been on doggie Prozac. He is still aggressive after all of that. He was NOT a pet store puppy but a rescue of sorts, I've had him since a very young age. He has never gotten along with any dogs/cats/people etc. He accepts my husband because he knows he has to, he accepts my 3 kids because he knows he has too. He hates my cat to this day. She is 18 years old (poor Kitty) Anyway point of the story we got a Doberman puppy back in November and I wasn't sure how it would go when I brought Pepper home. He never got along with our other two dogs that we had (both have now passed away.) It was pretty rough for the first month or so. But Pepper is so even tempered & well-mannered that it made things much easier for me. She puts up with so much. She's even rubbing off on him, he's calmed down a bit!

So basically what I'm trying to say is that if your Chi is even a "little" aggressive, she could easily dominate another dog no matter the size. If you get another dog the same size and it's a "little" aggressive also, you could have a lot of problems.
You should probably try to spend some time with your possible new addition to see what kind of personality/temperment he/she has.
(I had a pit-bull before and Sprocket (the Chi) tore her up. He was relentless. We had to keep them seperated. My pit was such a sweetheart! She passed away a couple years ago.)

As per the seperation anxiety, I know you don't want to go with a crate, but it seems like a good idea in your case. She would be safely contained and nothing would get destroyed. Just be sure to take off her collar. You could even put inside the crate a shirt that smells like you.
Sprocket LOVES his kennel, it's his safe haven. We don't really need it anymore but we still keep it for him because he loves it so much.

Best of luck to you (remember to give it some time)
